  • Numicon is a proven maths approach for ALL students. The visual & kinaesthetic approach is very appealing to all students including intermediate and secondary. It is a practical base to develop conceptual understanding - learning through play. Problem-solving using real-life contexts that give every activity a purpose. This course will be presented by Margi Leech Dip Teach, accredited by Oxford University Press with 30 years teaching in NZ and abroad. It is an introduction to Numicon for new teachers, or for teachers wanting a refresher to the Numicon approach. We will explore activities from Numicon 1 - 6. We will look closely at the printed resources as well as the apparatus demonstrating the value of a hands-on approach that uses conversation, problem-solving in a sequential, consistent approach across the strands and school. We will cover planning and assessment. This fee includes morning tea and a takeaway Maths resource that you can use in your classroom. Please bring your own lunch.   • Numicon is a proven inclusive mathematical approach for all levels of the curriculum. It is a practical based method which develops conceptual understanding of Maths, learning through play and the use of concrete materials. Problem solving, using real-life contexts underpins the activities allowing for practical applications and purpose. The course will be run by Margaret Slack BEd Dip Teach, ex Assistant Principal at Patumahoe with over 30 years teaching locally - trained by Margi Leech. She will be presenting an introduction to Numicon for all teachers, RTLB, and TAs who want to learn what Numicon is and how to use it. We will look at the printed resources as well as the apparatus and explore the use of manipulatives within your math programme. The course will also introduce the use of intervention programmes, Breaking Barriers, Big Ideas and the Numicon Intervention programme (NIP). We will provide you with a Maths Bag to take away. Morning tea is also provided but please bring your own lunch. This course is at Parkside School, 184 Wellington Street, Pukekohe.

The staff of St Patrick's School welcomes you to visit their school to chat with the staff and visit the classes from Years 0 - 8 using Numicon as their main Maths Programme. This one day training will look at the reasons why adults and children struggle with maths, both internal and external factors, with a focus on the impact of specific learning difficulties such as dyscalculia. Practical solutions will be explored to help children to overcome their barriers to learning including the effective use of concrete manipulatives, how to cope with maths anxiety and how to develop conceptual understanding through reasoning and development of mathematical language. The impact of dyslexia on Maths will also be covered. The sessions will be very hands on. You will be able to take away resources, activities and ideas to implement in your classrooms.
