  • In this session we will take a deeper look at what assessment is and explore what formative and summative assessment looks like and how this is important when making OTJs. You will see how Numicon milestone assessments fit with the NZC and gain practical tips as to how this can be managed in your classroom or in fact during ‘lock down’. We will also discuss differentiating your teaching using Numicon, and theories of mixed ability and flexible grouping.   • Learn for yourself about the fabulous results schools and classes are achieving for all their students with Numicon. This is smaller group allowing for questions and answers as we as what Numicon is. Many people think that Numicon is just for children with special needs, but it was written for entire classes and schools through in Year 8.. It just so happened that children with special needs who were learning in an inclusive setting made amazing progress. Intermediate and secondary schools are using Numicon for the first term of the year to help students make significant gains to enable all students to access the curriculum at NZC Level 4.

Margi is passionate about the connections that Numicon brings, especially into rich tasks that include Geometry. We will cover the NZC elements in Levels 1 and 2 and explore some activities that you can use in your classroom, even online! This will also include the use of robots from the digital curriculum.

  • This course will cover: 1.What Numicon is and why it's so successful. 2. What are Cuisenaire rods and how to use them. 3. Using the Rods to teach Multiplication and Division. 4. Word problems made easy. Have either your own set of Cuisenaire rods ready to use, or make some cardboard ones. Each rod is 1 centimetre longer. The '10' rod is 10 centimetres.
