Louise Pennington - Keynote:

In her Keynotes, Louise will explore the proven benefits of combining oracy and manipulatives in teaching maths, through the sharing of research and best practice.  Calling on the recent ‘Talk for Maths Benchmarks’ written by Oxford University Press in collaboration with UK Oracy Charity Voice21, she will signpost key themes to focus on in order to promote engagement and understanding in maths.

The science of maths - Mathematical proficiency is built on the foundational knowledge of concepts, procedures, reasoning, strategies and a child’s disposition. Calling on the growing body of evidence, Louise will explore what we know about how children best learn mathematics and how Numicon can and does supports this.  This approach is also seen in low threshold - high ceiling activities with Numicon

Conference workshops

You can attend any combination of workshops to suit you best!  There is a room limit, so get in quickly to avoid disappointment.

Leading with Impact: Embedding Numicon for Lasting Change

Turn obstacles into opportunities. Join us for a dynamic workshop designed for Maths Leaders, team leaders, assistant and deputy principals, and principals. Gain a clear maths vision, build momentum, and drive lasting change in student Maths achievement. Don’t miss out—lead with impact!

Going deeper with Geometry - More than a worksheet

Explore a range of Numicon activities in geometry, How can teachers promote deep thinking and communication in geometry? How are geometric relationships explored and  generalisations made?

Exploring Statistics & Probability

New statistics and probability lessons have been written by Kiwi teachers using Kiwi contexts to match the NZ curriculum. Come and explore a selection of these activities together. Belinda, one of the writers, will share her passion and insights for Stats and Probability.

Planning the activity groups and managing the classroom

Come and learn from an experienced Numicon teacher. Fran Tohill will share her insights about planning and managing a class.

The joy of Numicon in Years 7-8

How is the Numicon equipment used in Phase 3? Numicon supports and challenges older learners to think and communicate mathematically. Learn how this prepares them for secondary school.

Managing Inclusive Classrooms

UDL and CPA. Learn how Numicon caters for different learning styles and preferences through multiple means of representation, action & expressions and engagement through diverse strategies.

Assessment

Assessment is built into the Numicon programme allowing teachers to both respond in the moment to learning needs and use evidence and summative data to guide their team and school decision making.   This workshop will include examples of how this has been successful in raising achievement in schools.

Exploring Numicon Online Years 2-8

Come on a tour of Numicon Online with your own experienced guide. Learn how the resources support planning and assessment. Bring your own laptop to fully participate in this workshop. The interactive whiteboard (IWB) will be briefly introduced but another "IWB workshop" explores this in more depth.

Building Language Skills in Maths

How does Numicon build language skills? Come and learn how to encourage articulate communication in maths through intentional language practices such as oracy based tasks, sentence stems and others. In this workshop , Louise will explore what Oracy is, and why it is important both generally, and specifically for mathematics. Exploring research and examples of how language can enhance teaching and learning in mathematics. Delegates will also have the chance to consider opportunities for thinking and talking first hand, through engaging in a non-routine mathematical problem.

The Secrets of Cuisenaire Rods

Discover the beauty of mathematical reasoning and problem solving with Cuisenaire rods. Explore how to use this amazing tool with all students focusing particularly on addition, subtraction, multiplication, division and fractions. We will also look at Bar Modelling with Cuisenaire rods in this hands-on workshop.

Mastering the Interactive White Board (IWB)

Brittany will demonstrate how she uses the Interactive Whiteboard to promote learning in her maths lessons. Explore the different features of the IWB and hear tips and tricks from an experienced IWB user. Bring your own laptop to fully participate in this workshop. Teachers who whose classrooms monitors are not interactive will still find this session beneficial.

Explicit Teaching - Why and How

What does the research say about explicit teaching and inquiry learning? How do teachers move to using explicit teaching in their classrooms? Learn from Louise about the joy of teaching this way. Explicit instruction is a clear and structured way of teaching students, breaking new learning into manageable steps, guiding children from initial instruction to independent application. These are clearly shown in the Numicon planning. The workshop will bring these to life and support you in your planning and creating of slides.

How do I adapt my teaching for various student needs?

How to scaffold, support and extend when working from one Numicon book. Brittany will share specific examples of how she used Numicon 3 (Yr 4) and Numicon 4 (yr 5) with students requiring different levels of support and challenge.

Numicon for New Entrants and Year 1 - Firm Foundations

Come and learn how building firm foundations can grow great mathematicians. This session explores how the Year 1 programme builds a sense of number and algebra. We will also include tips for encouraging deep mathematical reasoning through talk.

Numicon for Years 2 and 3 - Numicon 1 & 2

Numicon 1 and 2 introduce important mathematical ideas and relationships. Come and see how Numicon supports all learners to grasp these important ideas. Also learn from an experienced teacher how her planning caters for diverse needs at this level.

Supporting Tier 3 Students

Are you supporting learners with special educational needs? This workshop will look at the Numicon Breaking Barriers resource. You will learn how Numicon makes abstract ideas visible and how learning can be broken down into very small steps.

No one left behind - including intervention

How do the Numicon resources support those not  grasping ideas quickly?   Come and hear how Science of Learning principles in the Numicon programme support all learners to achieve. This workshop also introduces the Numicon Intervention Programme (NIP) for those learners who need small group intervention.

Manipulating Manipulatives - the CPA Approach

Why are manipulatives so important? Dive into a fun, practical workshop where you’ll learn about the "Concrete, Pictorial, Abstract" approach to teach number.  We will explore Numicon Shapes, Rods, Baseboards, and more. Get hands-on experience, discover engaging activities, and build confidence to bring Numicon to life in your classroom. Perfect for teachers and support staff new to Numicon.

Numicon and the NZ Curriculum

Learn how the Curriculum resources and Numicon's scope and sequence can work together in your school. Explore Numicon's documents and teacher-designed planning and assessment documents that link Numicon to the Curriculum. Janette is an experienced facilitator of the Curriculum and Numicon.

Numicon in Phase 2

Jo, an experienced teacher with Numicon and former consultant will share the maths knowledge and practicalities of Numicon in Phase 2. Jo will focus on planning and managing the class during the lessons.  Bring your laptops to access Numicon Online.

Dyscalculia

Students with the gift of dyscalculia are incredible learners, but in a different way. How to they manage it? How can we support them in their journey?

Let's do TIME & MEASUREMENT with a focus on Phase 1

Reading and calculating with an analogue and digital clock presents some challenges for children. See how Numicon does this. This is a hands-on session. Bring your laptops to access Numicon Online.
